However, the sniper is in fact one of Rane's men and they instead murder Rane's escorts, allowing the villain to safely get back onto the plane. Biggs and the FBI reluctantly arrange to have Rane escorted back to the plane, but place a sniper on him, planning to take him out once the hostages are secured. While he is held at the control tower, Rane explains that he still has some men on board the plane, and unless he returns to the plane, they have been given orders to kill the remaining hostages, including Cassie. Meanwhile, Ramsey summons the FBI to the scene and they assert Cutter's true identity to Biggs, who releases him. Cutter escapes from custody and chases Rane and his men through the county fair, killing the thugs and leading to Rane's apprehension by Biggs. Rane also takes some of his men with him and leaves the plane. Biggs gives the go ahead for the refueling, while rane responds by generously releasing half of the passengers. Rane uses this to his advantage and tells them that Cutter turned on him. Cutter is captured by Sheriff Biggs and interrogated, believing him to be one of Rane's men. Rane radios the control tower and demands a refueling lest he kill more hostages. Cutter leaves the plane to look for help, and while he is gone, Carrie is captured. They dispatch one of Rane's men and dump the plane's fuel, forcing Rane to land at an airfield in Louisiana. He retreats into the cargo hold, where he finds flight attendant Carrie. Cutter manages to take him as his own hostage, but Rane coldly murders a random passenger and Cutter realises he is dealing with a madman. Cutter hides in the lavatory and manages to contact Ramsey and warn him, but is discovered by one of Rane's men. During the flight, several of Rane's men, posing as passengers and crew, kill the escorts, free Rane and seize control of the plane. However, also present on the plane is Charles Rane, a recently captured British terrorist, and his two FBI escorts. Cutter is reluctant but agrees to take a 'test run.' Ramsey then books him on a flight for Los Angeles, as the 57th passenger. Ramsey offers Cutter the position of teaching self defense to flight attendants. One day, Cutter is approached by an old friend of his, Stuart Ramsey, the president of Atlantic International Airlines. Feeling disgraced, he resigns from the force and begins to slide towards alcoholism. As the criminal tries to flee, Cutter finally draws his service weapon and guns him down. Cutter hesitates too long and Lisa is shot and killed by the thug. Cutter, a police officer, must think on his training and past experiences as he now finds his wife the victim of a hostage situation. However, their idyllic evening is shattered when they become caught up in a convenience store robbery. John Cutter and his wife Lisa make a stop at a convenience store on their way home from their anniversary dinner. Passenger 57 is an American action thriller film and a remake of the 1992 film of the same name.
